In Western Lands

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe ’tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey’s end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

In Midtown for training… for nearly a whole week!

It wasn’t easy, and it took some effort, but I got approved for 4 days of technology-related classroom training on advanced persistent threats through Learning Tree. I spent four days Dec 19-22 taking the train from home to NY Penn Station, then walking up to the classrooms on 47th St. It was kinda cold, so I walked briskly.

It was nice to get some official training this year, and to earn some much-needed CPE credits. In 2018, I resolve to attend more training that is not at the end of the year.

Joel’s review of Logan (2017)

I caught Logan (2017) on HBO this week. I had intended to watch it in theaters back in the Spring, but my plans never worked out. I was happy to watch it now, even on the small screen. This is purportedly the last film featuring Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine, and Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier / Professor X.

Wow. What a film.

I’ve recently been appreciating films and shows that don’t follow the typical script or plot lines. That are different or more realistic, instead of the happy ending films. I acknowledge the previous Fox X-Men films are PG, but Wolverine stabs all of these people and no blood? It’s a violent act and it’s like a video game with no consequences. It’s not realistic. Also, I find it difficult to watch many films these days that have predictable plots, or retread previous films. Where’s the creativity?

Logan blew me away. As I mentioned above, it’s the third film in the Wolverine-centric film series that started with X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009 (blech) and continued with The Wolverine in 2013 (better but couldn’t stick the landing.) Director James Mangold helmed both The Wolverine and Logan. I’ve seen some of his other films (Identity, Walk the Line, and 3:10 to Yuma) and I think he does a nice job with visuals. Anyway, the film is R rated, which allows us a mature story with adult themes. I found this so refreshing. We find Logan and Charles in 2029 living in hiding along the U.S. – Mexican border, along with mutant Caliban. Charles is around 90 and very frail due to advanced aging. Charles is also subject to these seizures that also generate dangerous psionic waves that can incapacitate and eventually kill. Logan’s own healing ability also appears to be severely weakened, and he has aged. Reminded me of Old Man Logan from the comic books. For some reason, the X-Men and all other mutants are gone, and no new mutants are being born. Mutants appear to be feared and quietly hunted again. It’s all very dire. After the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), you have to wonder what befell mutants a mere 6 years later.

Logan is soon requested to transport an 11-year-old girl, Laura, to Eden, a refuge in North Dakota. Soon Logan, Charles, and Laura are on the run from Alkali-Transigen (yes, same Alkali from the prior films.) The situation is dire, and the stakes are high. Laura is soon revealed to be X-23 from the comics, a young clone of Wolverine. And Transigen wants her back.

Through Charles and Logan, we see how our heros (first introduced in 2000) are clearly at the end of their life’s journey. And it’s a little sad. Charles is clearly very old, but to watch Logan limping, with a severely weakened healing ability, and struggling to win in fights he shouldn’t have difficulty with. Our heroes are dying and fallible. Between this film and The Last Jedi, in sending a common theme.

The film is well directed and the story grips you early. In the back of your mind, you’re wondering what has h happened to all our heroes in the past few years? With our protagonists in such dire straights, and the threat of violence and death ever-present, you’ll be tense. This is a fantastic film, and a tragic end to our heroes. It’s a much watch.

Joel’s review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

It’s finally here – Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017).

The wait is over.

We saw the film opening weekend, and I’m still digesting the film. The film takes place immediately after the events of The Force AwakensImmediately after. Rey has met Master Skywalker on Ahch-To, and the Resistance is escaping the planet of D’Qar before the First Order fleet shows up to wipe them out.

The film is primarily set in two locations and themes – 1) Rey trying to convince Luke to train her in the ways of the Jedi and return to the Resistance, and 2) the Resistance attempting to outrun and escape the First Order fleet chasing after them. There is a side plot where Finn and another Resistance character Rose are attempting to find and enlist the help of a slicer (hacker), but I found that side plot to be minor and kinda boring.

Of the two main plots, I found the Rey / Luke portion to be more interesting. Our original hero Luke has certainly fallen into terrible despair. After the destruction of his fledgling New Jedi Order, he’s full of doubt and loathing about himself, and sees the vicious cycle of Light and Dark to be terrible. I can understand this, because if you read the various Star Wars comic books, games, and other content from the Expanded Universe (“Legacy”), you would also be appalled to find that yet another fascist organization (The First Order) has arisen, there are Dark Side users leading it, and some of Luke’s own former pupils have joined it. Wow, I’d be depressed too.

There are a number of fans who have issues with the film, primarily that director Rian Johnson has jettisoned some of the mysteries that J.J. Abrams introduced in Episode VII, as well as not having Luke be some grand titan who comes back to wipe out the First Order and save the day. Instead, we’re forced to watch our childhood hero be…. less than heroic. He’s depressed. He’s exiled himself to a lonely planet so that he can die.  It’s tough. Rian Johnson actually causes a number of fake outs throughout the film with the purpose of throwing away the clichés and tropes and hackneyed plot turns that you would expect. And I appreciated that. This wasn’t going to be a successful and engaging story if it followed the story beats of Empire Strikes Back. And if it followed some elements or twisted them slightly, then it would just as bad (in my eyes) as Star Trek Into Darkness. As an artist, I respected Rian Johnson and the entire creative team for not being afraid to throw away a lot of the old stuff, and blaze a new path.

As the audience, you have no idea what could happen in Episode IX. None. That’s exciting.

Rise Against Hunger Lock-In

On Friday Dec 15th, Josh and I participated in the Rise Against Hunger Lock-In at the Episcopal cathedral down in Trenton. It was a long week at work, and I had just pulled a an all nighter Thursday night. It was a bit snowy outside, but I rushed home, we got our sleeping bags and other supplies together. We drove down to Trenton in the snow to the cathedral, and luckily we only missed a little of the initial ice breaker. This was our first time attending the lock-in, but I’ve done something similar when I was in a church youth group back in the 1988/1989.

The kids participated in a brief Friday evening church service, we had a late snack (pizza?), then the kids, then the kids hung out playing games until 11Pm. Due to the lack of sleep all week, I was exhausted and tired. While the kids played games, other adults were helping to bring in the Rise Against Hunger supplies. I normally would have assisted, but I was running on fumes by this point. I found a comfortable table, and fell asleep. I woke up around 1 AM, and found a huge assembly line with teenagers and adults helping to pour, pack, and package soup bags to be donated to less fortunate people around the world through Rise Against Hunger.

I had already missed out, so I just hung around until they were done. They finished sometime around 3 AM, then helped clean up. Joshua considered going to play some more downstairs, but he was also tired, so we camped out in our sleeping bags in the same room you see in the photo below. We were all up 3 hours later, and we had to leave the cathedral by 7 AM. I had another church youth group member with me, and I dropped her off at our church in South Brunswick early Saturday morning.

Josh’s 7th Grade Concert

I was running a little late, but I rushed out of work on a Wednesday evening and drove straight to the middle school to hear Josh and the 7th grade band play. It’s a large band, and there’s not a lot to photograph from our vantage point, but here’s a photo of Josh and his friend Kaiya.

Our new Klipsch Reference R-26F speakers have arrived

After waiting an interminable… 10 days (that doesn’t sound that bad), the new front speakers arrived. Wow they’re big.

I unpacked them Tuesday evening, connected all of the wiring (including using banana plugs for the first time), and hooked them up. Wow they’re loud. Even without the center channel, watching (and listening) is a marked improvement. I’m glad we didn’t settle for a soundbar.

I also configured Spotify on it, and I like it. You control it through your smartphone app. If you have the tv on, the artist, album, and song title are apparently displayed. Now I have to wonder if we want to keep the Sonos Play:5 downstairs between the kitchen and family room, or move it elsewhere like the master bedroom. We no longer connect the Echo Dot to the Play:5 via AUX port anymore. Hmmm.

Here are the specs from the website:

  • Fills small to medium rooms with powerful, lifelike performances
  • Dynamic 1″ aluminum Linear Travel Suspension horn-loaded tweeter
  • Dual 6.5″ copper-spun high-output IMG woofers
  • Dimensions: 39″ H x 7.8″ W x 13.5″ D
  • Brushed black polymer veneer cabinet

Once the center channel arrives, and I hook it up too, I’ll need to properly tune them all. Still pretty exciting.

Making our own Christmas card

In preparation for sending out our annual Christmas card, we usually go to JC Penney or other outside studio to take our photo. I swear to you, no matter what, we’re still reliant on bringing the photos back, and me fixing them further in Photoshop. All of this after spending all that money for a studio portrait.

This year, in the interest of time and money, we decided to bring the studio in-house and do it on our own. It’s definitely harder without someone standing behind the camera, but I think we did a nice job. Besides the final product, I thought I would also share a bunch of test photos, because they’re also interesting.

An impromptu Wednesday night on Broadway to see Dear Evan Hansen

Although the Ipes maintain a well-curated family calendar, we do appreciate a little spontaneity now and then. Late Wednesday afternoon, Namita found two orchestra seats for the 8 pm performance of Dear Evan Hansen over at the Music Box Theateron 45th. Nums was willing to get the kids situated, grab a 6 pm local train to Midtown. Would I be interested?

An impromptu Wednesday night to see a Broadway show with my honey bunny? Hells yeah!

We barely made it on time because her train was late getting in, we had trouble finding each other at NY Penn, and our short cab ride up 8 blocks of 8th Ave rush hour traffic took forever. But we made it!

The show was very good, but it went long. By the time we finished, we had 15 minutes to cab it back to NY Penn and catch our next train back. Made that too. Now, since I hadn’t eaten yet, I was happy to eat leftovers close to 1 am when we got home.

Our new Sony A/V receiver and Klipsch subwoofer arrived this week

I have some major/minor updates to share. I picked up the new Sony A/V receiver from Best Buy last Sunday. Although I have unpacked it, there was not much to do except stare at it, and plug it into the network jack. No speakers yet!

I’m glad it fit in the cabinet because it’s big and tall. It does radiate some heat, so I removed a shelf to hopefully improve air flow.

Tuesday night, I was disappointed to learn the subwoofer arrived…. and only the subwoofer. It seems Klipsch decided to separate each of the three items onto different UPS tracking numbers, and neglected to mention it. I rush home to find one subwoofer. I actually walked outside again to double check. Packing slip said one item. One subwoofer and nothing to do with it.

I called customer support the next morning, and yup, multiple packages, and they didn’t mention that. Grumble. Any idea when they would ship? Nope. Next day Klipsch updated tracking info with the two additional UPS tracking numbers. Estimated delivery – a week later on Dec 6th. Seriously?

I called customer support again and they cited getting slammed by Black Friday orders. And the speakers were coming via truck from Nevada. Double grumble. I don’t know if I like Klipsch quality, but I definitely don’t like their logistics and operations.

Remember I ordered a new center channel speaker? It’s been stuck in “Shipping Soon” status for days. No idea why.

Triple grumble. Don’t do this to me, Klipsch.
