The garage renovation project is moving along

In October, we made a lot of progress on the garage. The kids continued to help me clean out the garage, painting the walls, and moving the monster freezer and other items. We’ve continued to sort and clean out junk, and keep moving the line.

They also were a big help to me with installing our new garage organization system. After many months of reviewing the multitude of organizational systems, I decided to go with the Gladiator GarageWorks system from Whirlpool. Using either their single GearTrack or the larger GearWall products, you fasten these to every stud, then use their specialty hooks, baskets, and shelves to organize the madness.

After some learning errors, we got pretty good at finding the studs, deciding correct height & placement, and whatnot. Although I drafted preliminary designs, I’m rethinking it. I’ll proceed for now, but I reserve the right to reorganize at a later date.

As you can see, a lot got done in October on weeknights and over the weekends. The floor got seriously cleaned out, most of the painting got done, more shelving is up, and layout is getting finalized. As a test run, I was able to park my car IN THE GARAGE for the first time in years. I even changed all the warm low wattage incandescent lightbulbs to daylight color higher wattage LED lightbulbs instead. Huge upgrade.

Speaking of electrical, in my mind, I’ve intended for a long while now to add additional features to the house, including lighting. After polling a few people, reading reviews, and looking compatibility with the various smart assistants, I decided to standardize on Lutron switches. Install the Lutron bridge to connect 50 devices, replace the basic toggle switches with smart ones, use new wallplates, and set up in the app and Google Assistanct.

As a test run, I started with the exterior driveway lights and front door entryway lights. Why? Because no one but me remembers to turn the outside lights on or off. Bugs the heck out of me. I attempted to replace the garage switches, but that was a confusing mess, so I had to call one of our local electricians in for a quick fix. After that, smooth sailing, and I replaced the bank of switches in the foyer.

Success! So far, pretty damn awesome. They’re on a schedule, so now I never have to worry about them.

Josh at the BSA National Youth Leadership Training

For the next two weekends, Josh is staying out in Pennsylvania for two straight weekends to attend a National Youth Leadership Training with the BSA. He attended with two of his friends from the Troop. They had pretty good weather for both weekends, and I think they learned some good skills.

Josh’s Confirmation

On Sunday, October 6 2019, we celebrated Josh’s confirmation in the Episcopal church. This year, after many months, Josh and another young woman were confirmed in a very nice service. The service was postponed a few months due to scheduling issues with the Bishop, but I’m glad we could finally celebrate.

After the service, we coordinated with the other family on a nice Italian lunch in the church fellowship hall. I still remember my confirmation back when I was 12 years old in our town’s Methodist church, so I’m proud of him finally getting confirmed. It’s a nice big step along the journey.

NYC Date Night Mon Sept 23 2019 — freestyle love supreme

Nums won two tickets for us to see freestyle love supreme from Lin-Manual Miranda. I had never heard of it, but it’s an improvisational hip-hop comedy musical group started by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Veneziale in 2004. The group is currently performing at the Booth Theatre, and she won us preview tickets!

It was fun. Some people are very talented. My date was cute.

The Garage Renovation Project continues – painting and painting and more painting

As avid readers may recall, we replaced our original (and dented) garage doors in October 2018. In May 2019, we started prepping, cleaning, and priming the garage walls. We hadn’t decided on a color yet, but we definitely needed to prime. I started on the far wall, and the kids helped me clearing out and discarding/sorting all the junk. I’m glad they were around, because it was a LOT of stuff to get through.

Once we decided on a color — a grey that wasn’t too dark or too light, the three of us went to town on the walls. I took on the job of painting the ceiling white and any high wall corners grey.

If you look closely, we’ve cleared out the floor on the side where we are painting. The plan is to keep clearing space (without putting any junk back), and eventually the entire floor should be clear by the time we’re done. Also, Josh and I moved the large commercial freezer to the other side of the garage closer to the kitchen so we don’t have to walk so far during meal prep. Smart!

Guys Trip to Pittsburgh

Approaching mid September, some of the guys and I were really missing each other’s company. I couldn’t remember when we had all gotten together the last time. We decided to all fly into a central meeting spot — Pittsburgh – for a quick weekend to chill out, eat, drink, and be merry.

The weekend weather turned out to be pretty good, so that was nice. We grabbed drinks and appetizers across the street on Friday night. On Saturday, we had brunch, Sean and I visited the Andy Warhol museum (I learned so much!), and then we all went out for drink Saturday night

Sunday was pack up and fly out. It was a quick weekend, but we all got to see each other in the flesh. Mission accomplished.
