I’m four years behind, but I finally got around to watching Quantum of Solace. You know me — I’m way behind on the movies in my life. It’s not simply the older movies like E.T., The Goonies, and Hitchcock films that I haven’t seen. It’s all of these other recent films that I never caught in the theaters. Though, I must admit that I think the I initial mediocre reviews in 2008 likely dampened my ardor to pay $10 to watch it. Skyfall is out now, so I thought I should catch up.
Quantum of Solace is a direct sequel to Casino Royale, Daniel Craig’s first outing as the timeless secret agent James Bond. In that film, it ended on a smaller downer (no spoilers), and James Bond was out for revenge. In this film, Bond is supposed to be still out for revenge, but I didn’t quite get that. It seemed as if he was following one lead to another from the last film, then more action scenes happen. In the end, there was some amorphous cabal out there that was trying to profit from limited natural resources. Bond begins to appear to be out of control, so MI6 orders that he be brought in. More action scenes, explosions, film over.
As the audience, I didn’t exactly get pulled into the story, and I felt the action was a bit… generic? Not impressed. I hope Skyfall is better.
