Business trip to Boston, MA

I took the train up to Boston for a business trip last week, my first business of the year on my own. I was also supposed to travel with a colleague, but the weather was a problem. How would I do on my own? We’d soon find out.

Instead of driving, I elected to take Amtrak. I didn’t want to rent a car and drive all the way up there. There are benefits to sitting and relaxing, and being able to work on the train. This was the same week that we had a huge snowstorm that hit the East Coast. There was plenty of snow up in Boston, and more in New Jersey.  The trip went well overall, even by myself. Train ride up north was uneventful, and I ended up walking from the South Street Station the mile to my hotel, the Westin Boston Waterfront. I grabbed a quick dinner in the hotel restaurant, and worked that evening from the hotel room.

The first day was good. In the evening, I had dinner at the Laugh Boston comedy club in the hotel. Go figure — a comedy club. I didn’t want to spend both of my evenings cooped up in a hotel room. Also, new SNL Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost was performing, so hey, pretty cool. It’s bad weather outside, and a minor celebrity is performing at a comedy club in your hotel. How lame do you have to be to miss that opportunity?

The ride home Friday evening was fine also, albeit for one apparently mentally unstable woman who appeared in my seat while we waited at NY Penn Station. I jumped on the 10:30pm NJ Transit train at Newark, and sat through a hour-long local train ride back to Princeton. Expecting a huge pile of snow on the car, I was very surprised to find a clean car, and a love note from my wife. So she came during the evening to clean the car for me.

That’s love for ya.
