My buddy Doug is getting married in December, and I'm the best man. As best man, I'm responsible for three things -- organizing the bachelor party, giving a toast at the reception, and making out with a bridesmaid. Task #1 was accomplished in 4 days, 4 nights in Montreal in October 2005.
Just deciding on the location is tough. We could have gone to Las Vegas, but Doug felt we'd done that already. He felt no interest in going to Miami. We live close to NYC, and we'd never get into any clubs in L.A. We originally thought about Tampa, as it's a big college town, but Doug was rather skeptical. I gave him two options: Montreal and New Orleans, but I was pushing for Montreal. According to Ask Men.com, after Las Vegas, Montreal and New Orleans are the next big bachelor party locales. He thought about it, got advice to go to New Orleans from his coworkers, but sided me anyway.
With the devastation of Hurricane Katrina wiping out New Orleans, isn't he glad I was right?
BTW, the bachelor party went very well, and Doug found relaxation being away from his job and the wedding planning, and so on. The fellows in attendance:
BTW, one small note: you may notice the title image of this page is a bit different stylistically than the usual found here. That's because, unbeknownst to us, the 15th Anniversary Black & Blue Festival was the same weekend. What is that, you ask? Oh, just the largest party for gay men and women in North America or whatever. The best/worst was going to this after-hours club Stereo, paying $35 each as cover, and then going in to find 400 gay men dancing without any tops. We didn't stay too long.
Doug met me at my home, and I flew out of Newark straight to Montreal. After taking a cab to the hotel, we chilled out, went walking around to explore, got some dinner at Burger King and chilled out there. Around 9 or 10pm, we went out for drinks along Crescent St, scoping out the city for when everyone else arrived Friday.
Paul arrived around noon. We all chilled out in the general vicinity of the hotel, I did work from my hotel room, and we three went to dinner at Benihana. After that, we met up with Mark and Sean late at night after they arrived.
Saturday was a really fun day. The Kondorf family arrived late Friday night (Mike, Pete, Gerry), and we met up with them late Saturday morning. Most of us went for a walk around Montreal to see the sights, including St. Denis and St. Laurent Blvd.
In the evening, we had a great steak dinner at Moishe's on St. Laurent, and we all had to tell one embarassing story about Doug. After dinner, we got ready, lit up some cigars, and walked back to St. Laurent for some clubbing at Juice, Upperclub, and a few other places. I think the evening ended at Les Princesses around 5 or 6am.
Sunday was chill-out day. For lunch, while Doug, uh, sobered up, Sean, Paul, and I went out for a walk to explore, get some lunch. We went on a Don Quixiote quest for an Indian restaurant that was open on a Sunday, but we finally ended up at a Lebanese place.
The Kondorf clan had left around noon, so it was just the core group of Sean, Paul, myself, and Doug. We didn't see Mark very much on the trip. Those British guys are so unpredictable.
After we got back, lots more chilling out, then out for more drinking in the evening. Obviously more drinking. What else is there to do? I think we finished up around 3 or 4am.
What was Monday? Oh, no big deal. We slept in, had a late breakfast from McDonald's, and then took a cab to the airport. After saying our goodbyes, we said our hellos at the airport again, as all of our flights were heavily delayed. What to do, but hang out. We got lunch at the airport. I think after a 3 hour delay, Doug and I finally began our flight back to NJ.
