Joshua at the state spelling bee

In early February, Joshua participated and won 1st place in a spelling bee hosted by the Greater Hightstown Juniorettes. The top three winners were invited to compete with other winners from the state on March 7th. That Saturday morning, we drove over to the headquarters of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC in New Brunswick to participate in their state-level spelling bee. We weren’t quite sure what to expect from all of this, but it didn’t hurt to participate. I was imagining some large ballroom with hundreds of other competitors, but it wasn’t all that. It was a large-ish room at  this organization’s headquarters with maybe 40 4th and 5th graders, and the parents sitting on folding chairs on the side. They had some hard words to spell, and certainly some that I would get incorrect. Josh made it into the top 10 but got eliminated. I was happy that he didn’t cry like some of the others, and took it pretty well. Good competitive spirit there.

We hung out to see who would win, and the top three were all 5th graders. Better luck next time!
