I needed to relax one night, and I decided to catch Edge of Tomorrow on Netflix earlier this week. This came out last year, and it looked interesting, but I never had time to go see it with anyone. The film stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as soldier in a war against alien invaders. The film was directed by Doug Liman, who has directed or written the Bourne movies, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Swingers, and Go, among others. Cruise plays a soldier named Cage, who does recruitment PR to help draft new soldier for this ongoing war against those aforementioned alien invaders. Cage is forced to the front lines to help in an invasion reminiscent of the Normandy invasion during World War II. Emily Blunt plays Rita Vrataski. a seasoned soldier.
For a strange reason, during this Allied invasion, Cage dies, but returns at a specific point in the previous day, alive, but aware of what happened. A la Groundhog Day, Cage keeps repeating these same 24 hours over and over again, slowly getting better at surviving. He and Rita begin to focus on how to use this to their advantage, in order to defeat the aliens.
I love Groundhog Day, and this is an interesting science fiction film. Cruise and Blunt are interesting to watch, but the reason for the time travel is a little hard to believe. Adapted from the the 2004 Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, it’s an entertaining film, and not a bad way to spend two hours of your life. The special effects, the writing, and the story are pretty entertaining. Go for it, with my blessing.
