Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

The story of a regular guy just looking for a little wreck-ognition.

When the initial trailer for Wreck-It Ralph (2012) came out a few months ago, and that Disney was releasing it in mid-November, I was pretty certain we’d be seeing this during Thanksgiving weekend. Lo and behold, were there any other choices to see as a family? Nope. This was gonna be it. Luckily, it looked pretty good. It’s a non-Pixar Disney animated film, and that usually doesn’t bode well. Seriously, animated non-Pixar Disney films haven’t had the best track record, but maybe this is a sign of improving quality.

To make the event a bit more special, and to reduce the stress of getting to the theater early enough to get good seats, we took them to the 6pm showing at the AMC Dine-In theater at Menlo Park mall. Reserved seats, dinner, what more could you ask for? The kids were pretty excited, and I think they enjoyed experience. Getting a parking spot wasn’t easy that evening though, as the mall was full due to Black Friday. I dropped them off at the theater, eventually found a spot, then jogged over to meet them inside.

What did we think of the film? It was good. So, brief synopsis if you need, without spoilers — John C. Reilly plays the 80’s video arcade villain “Wreck-It Ralph” where he destroys a building, and the player plays as “Fix-It Felix” (voiced by Jack McBrayer.) After 30 years of being a villain without getting any love or being included in the “Nicelander” parties, he goes off into other games in the arcade looking for a medal that will demonstrate he’s a hero.

He doesn’t actually hit many games at all, but along the way, he meets Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch) and 9-year old Vanellope (Sarah Silverman.) It’s an interesting story, and the animation is very good. And yes, there are shout-outs and cameos to video games, but Bowser, Zangief, etc, are only brief cameos.

Easy film to recommend, so take the kids, and go watch it, especially if you like video games.
