The Breakfast Club (1985)

24 years later, I have finally watched The Breakfast Club. I’ll give you a moment to pick your jaw up off the floor.

Hard to imagine, isn’t it?  The Breakfast Club came out in 1985, was extremely popular, been on regular network and cable TV for more than two decades, not to mention its availability at rental stores and services such as Netflix and Blockbuster. How is it possible that I, a child of the 80’s, have never watched this movie?

I don’t really know. My parents never let me watch movies in the movie theater until 1992. I’ve never seen The Breakfast Club on the pay-channels when I had them. It’s been on the TV networks, but I don’t like watching movies for the first time on network TV, due to all the editing. The movie has been on both my Netflix and Blockbuster movie queues, but alway far down the list.

Thanks to our soon-to-be-ending free trial of Cinemax, I saw it coming up, and recorded it.  It’s been sitting around for more than a month, but I finally sat down to watch it.

Written and directed by John Hughes, I thought it was good. However, I admit that I wasn’t moved by the overall story, so I don’t quite know why it’s been such a big deal for all this time.  I read that it perfectly captures all that teenage angst, and explores the social cliques that exist in school while growing up. It was good in those aspects, but I was not overwhelmed by the message.  Maybe I missed the boat by not watching it as a teenager?

I am happy to finally made major inroads on watching all these pivotal films of the 1980’s. I’ve (obviously?) already seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (you can’t miss that movie) and Sixteen Candles, so I’m catching up on the Brat Pack movies. Next 80’s movie on my list? Would you believe I’ve never seen E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial?
